About

The Cortland YMCA Stingers Swim Team has built up a regional, state and national reputation for excellence in swimming.  Despite Cortland’s small size, the Cortland Y Stingers have convincingly proven that they can compete against larger upstate cities, New York City and Long Island teams.  Our swimmers have set records and won state, regional and national titles.  Many Cortland swimmers have gone on to compete at the collegiate level on scholarships at Ivy League, Eastern, Western and Mid-Western Universities.  Members of the Cortland Y Stingers proudly enter any meet as one of the “teams to beat.”  As importantly, all our swimmers have proven to be winners by acquiring, through the program, qualities that will help them throughout life:  self discipline and self-confidence.

The Cortland YMCA Stingers swim team provides a positive environment for swimmers ages 5 –18, of all abilities, to grow as athletes, teammates and citizens. Stingers swimmers achieve success through hard work and attention to detail, building self confidence, fitness and great friendships that transcend the sport of swimming.

The Stingers have been fostering outstanding swimmers and people for nearly forty years.
Throughout those years the team has produced countless district and state champions, dozens of YMCA national qualifiers (including 1 national champion), and 1 Olympian competing at the 2012 London Olympics. This high level of achievement has been carried over to the collegiate level as Stingers have excelled as students-athletes at all levels of college swimming including Ivy League, Big Ten, Big Twelve, Big East, Patriot League and Conference USA universities. Most recently, 2011 witnessed 9 Stinger district champions, 1 state champion and 2 YMCA national qualifiers.
